Defending champion Mirra Andreeva embraces Emirati culture in Dubai
Tennis champion experiences first-hand craftsmanship and fashion
DUBAI – Returning to Dubai as defending champion, Mirra Andreeva paused from competition at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships to explore Emirati culture.
The Russian star donned a traditional abaya and Arab-style jewellery for the first time, gaining insight into the craftsmanship behind the attire.
For Andreeva, the cultural experience was both surreal and memorable. “I’m so happy that I’m the one trying all of these outfits, dresses, and jewellery. It’s a surreal experience, and I’m just super happy to be trying this now,” she said.
Andreeva faced American Amanda Anisimova in the quarterfinals on Centre Court this afternoon.
Handmade heritage
The WTA 1000 champion learned the time and care involved in producing each piece of traditional Emirati clothing. “They chose two colours for the dress, and I asked which one would look better on me. They said that green would look better, so I stuck with what they chose. I also learned that this is usually handmade, so it’s crazy how much time goes into making these dresses,” Andreeva explained.
Although she had seen Emirati attire widely worn, this was her first chance to wear an abaya. “I like that it’s pretty different from what I usually wear, but at the same time it’s so beautiful. I just love every single piece of what I’m wearing right now,” she added.
Local collaboration
Andreeva’s experience was curated with The Alley Line, a Dubai-based fashion brand celebrating authentic Emirati heritage through handcrafted traditional designs.
The off-court moment emphasised how international sporting events in Dubai connect cultures, giving visiting athletes a deeper engagement with the country beyond competition.
WTA 1000
The WTA 1000 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships runs from 15-21 February at Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium, featuring 16 of the world’s top 20 and 35 of the top 40 players. The ATP 500 men’s event follows from 23-28 February.
